7 Best MTG Token Generators [Helpful Tokens Guide]

1. Bitterblossom

Bitterblossom out of the Morningtide set was released in 2008. It had an impressive run with forty-two Top 8 Grand Prix and eleven Pro Tour Top 8 finishes.

This rare black enchantment costs two mana (one black and one colorless). Its triggered ability is that you lose one life at the beginning of your upkeep and put a 1/1 black faerie rogue token with flying into play.

Many of the tournament placements that this card had seen utilized it in some form of a faerie deck. However, it is so powerful that eventually, players discovered, if you ran almost any black deck, you were better off having it in than not.

This card is now only allowed in Modern, Vintage, Legacy, and Commander.

2. Nissa, Vastwood Seer/Nissa, Sage Animist

Technically, Nissa, Vastwood Seer does not generate any tokens, but her transformed version does.

Released in 2015 from the Magic Origins set, this card since then has seen forty-four Top 8 Grand Prix and ten Pro Tour Top 8 finishes.

Once transformed into Nissa, Sage Mist, her second ability allows you to place a legendary 4/4 token onto the battlefield.

Most of the time, players would opt to play this ability once because you may only have one legendary creature on the battlefield at any one time. Then they would exploit the first ability increasing her counter and drawing the top card of the deck. If that card is a land, then it is placed onto the battlefield; otherwise, it was placed into the player’s hand.

Relatively quickly, you could ramp up your mana pool and still have a ton of cards to choose to play because of this ability.

This card is not legal in Standard, Alchemy, Historic, Brawl, and Pauper.

3. Elspeth, Sun’s Champion

Elspeth has to be one of the top contenders when you think of cards that generate free tokens plus advance your strategy. This legendary planeswalker came out of the Theros set being released in 2013.

It was so incredible that it saw eighty Top 8 Grand Prix and fifteen Top 8 Pro Tour finishes, which is probably the most for a token-generating card.

Costing six mana (two white and for colorless), its first ability that lets you add counters to it is its token generator, and it saw your opponents break into a sweat when it hit the battlefield.

In the second round that Elspeth was out, you could essentially wipe the board of any creatures with power 4 or greater, leaving your soldier creature tokens in play. A few rounds after that, your opponent would be overwhelmed with tokens, and then Elspeth ultimate allowed you to boost them with a +2/+2 and give them flying.

This card is not legal in Standard, Alchemy, Historic, Brawl, and Pauper.

4. Emeria Angel

Released in 2009 and coming out of the Zendikar set, Emeria Angel had a number of competitive placements, including two Top 8 Pro Tour and six Top 8 Grand Prix finishes.

It is a rare 3/3 flying angel that costs only four mana (two white and two colorless). What’s fantastic about its triggered landfall ability is that when a land enters the battlefield under your control, you may put a 1/1 flying bird token into play. There is nothing like generating tokens from playing lands, and Emeria is probably the best card to do so.

You can see that in conjunction with Elspeth, a deck centered around landfall and tokens can quickly and effectively trample your opponent.

This card is legal in Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Commander, and Penny Dreadful.

5. Lingering Souls

Another white token generating card makes our list. However, this is not a creature card but a Sorcery. Lingering Souls was released in 2012 from the Dark Ascension set and has had since then fifty Top 8 Grand Prix and five Top 8 Pro Tour finishes.

This uncommon Sorcery is relatively cheap, only costing three mana (one white and two colorless). By paying its casting cost, you are able to place two 1/1 spirit flying creature tokens onto the battlefield. Not bad at all. Furthermore, it has a triggered Flashback ability that allows you to play it again from the graveyard, and this time it will only cost two mana (one black and one colorless).

Hence for the price of 5 mana, you get four 1/1 flying creatures which you can put out all in one turn if luck and strategy are on your side.

Lingering Souls is legal in Modern, Legacy, Vintage, and Commander.

6. Divine Visitation

As you can see, white token generating cards are pretty prominent in our list, but there is no bias here; we have chosen the ones we feel stand out from the rest.

Although Divine Visitation has not seen any Pro Tour Top 8 or Grand Prix Top 8 finishes, it is noteworthy to mention that in conjunction with another token generating card or mechanic, once this card is on the battlefield, all hell is about to break loose.

Released in 2018 coming from the Guilds of Ravnica set, this mythic rare enchantment can only generate tokens if tokens are being generated.

Its ability states that if one or more creature tokens were created under your control, then create that many 4/4 white flying angel tokens with vigilance. As you can see, in conjunction with any of our previous cards in one round, you may have a flurry of flying angels at your back and call.

This card is not legal in Standard, Alchemy, Brawl, or Pauper.

7. Sorin, Solemn Visitor

This is our only other multicolored casting card on our list, but it still has white in it. This version of Sorin from the Khans of Tarkir set was released in 2014 and sported an astounding fifty-eight Grand Prix Top 8 and four Pro Tour top 8 finishes.

Not only can Sorin generate tokens, but his first ability allows you to increase the power of your creatures, plus giving them life ink for a turn.

It appeared in the infamous Abzan deck, and most of Sorin’s top finishes, as well as a first-place, were in that deck.

His token-generating ability requires you to remove two counters, but in doing so, you are able to place a 2/2 black vampire creature with flying onto the battlefield under your control.

This card works fantastically with a token generating deck and is legal in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, and Commander.
